Progressive governments in Albania and FYR Macedonia made it possible for the two countries to achieve a 2019 start date for EU accession negotiations.
The path to EU membership for both countries is high on the agenda at the pre-summit meeting of Party of European Socialists prime ministers today, attended by FYR Macedonia prime minister Zoran Zaev as well as Alexis Tsipras of Greece.
The Party of European Socialists will announce nominations for its common candidate for the President of the European Commission by 19 October this year, it was agreed today by representatives of PES member parties and organisations.
The PES Presidency meeting held in Riga, Latvia, fully supported the proposal that all PES member parties should be involved in a transparent and democratic process to nominate their candidates.
The PES warmly welcomes the agreement reached by prime ministers Alexis Tsipras and Zoran Zaev, and the governments in Athens and Skopje, in the long-running dispute over the name of the former Yugoslav republic.
